How to measure a parcel properly?

Volume weight is calculated using the formula: Volume weight = length (cm) x Width (cm) x Height (cm) / 5000. This formula is used to determine the chargeable weight of a package in the transportation industry, as lighter goods can take up a lot of space and result in a higher chargeable weight. The greater of the actual weight or the volumetric weight is used to determine the parcel ticket required.

It's important to measure the parcel properly, as under-ticketed parcels will incur additional fees (the difference, plus an admin fee of $5.50 excluding GST). The package size should be measured at the longest or most protruding point, and it's recommended to add 2-3 cm on each side to account for potential deformation during transportation.

It's also important to consider the design of the box itself, as the dimensions printed on the box may refer to the inner diameter, while the actual shipment measures the external size of the box. To avoid under-ticketing charges, make sure to measure the actual size of the box.

There are three cases to measure the volume weight:

Standard package measurement method:

The package is of standard carton size and has no protrusions on any side

The volume weight is calculated according to the length, width and height of the carton.

Example: the package is 15cm long, 30cm wide and 20cm high,

Volume weight = (15 x 30 x 20)/5000=1.8kg,

the actual weight is 1.2kg

Then the chargeable weight of this package is 1.8kg,

The final billing weight is 2kg.

Package with curved side:

If the package expands, deforms and bulges due to the extrusion of goods,

It is calculated according to the highest point of each side of the package.

Example: the original measurement of the carton is 15cm long, 30cm wide and 20cm high. Due to the squeeze of goods, the length of the sealed box is 18cm, the width is 33cm and the height is 22cm.

Then the volume weight = (18 x 33 x 22)/5000=2.7kg,

The actual weight is 2kg,

Then the chargeable weight of this package is 2.7kg,

The final billing weight is 3kg.

Irregular package measurement method:

Due to the actual size of the goods, they need to be packed into irregular packages.

The volume weight of the package is calculated according to the highest point of each side of the package.

Example: the maximum length of irregular package is 15cm, the maximum width is 40cm and the maximum height is 25cm.

Then the volume weight = (15 x 40 x 25)/5000=3kg,

The actual weight is 2kg,

The final billing weight is 3kg.

It's always important to measure your parcel correctly to avoid under-ticketing and any additional fees. The 3D lens and AI technology used at the logistics company helps to accurately measure the volume weight of your parcel, taking into account any deformations that may occur during transportation. It's important to measure the external size of your box, as the internal dimensions printed on the box may not accurately reflect the actual size of the shipment. Additionally, it's recommended to add 1-2cm to each side to account for any potential deformations during handling and transportation.
